Press release: The fourth physical meeting for the project ”The new Scandinavian Quality Control model”

On August 15,  a large group of members and the project group met for the fourth physical meeting for the project ”The new Scandinavian Quality Control model”.

The venue was Samhall’s plant i Malmö.  Samhall is a state-owned company with the mission to create enriching jobs for people with disabilities. Samhall is also a member of Sveriges Tvätteriförbund.

Samhall is one member that has shown a very large interest in the project. The project’s priority is also to reach those with fewer possibilities, so all capabilities within Samhall with internal school etc just strengthen the interaction in these areas.

The participants were warmly greeted by Magnus Björkman, plant manager.

Sweden, Denmark, and Norway stand uniquely in linking the membership in the national industry association for textile service companies with quality controls. The aim is to guarantee seriousness and quality in the members’ deliveries.

To further develop this process, Sveriges Tvätteriförbund (the Swedish Textile Services Association) and Brancheforeningen for Vask og Tekstiludlejning (The Washing and Textile Services Association of Denmark) are participating in a project co-financed by Erasmus+ from 2023 to 2024. The results of the project will be presented at Texcare in November.

The agenda for the day:

  • Update on the Green Deal/other EU initiatives
  • Special focus on Producer Responsibility (EPR) (background, what we know and what it can mean)
  • Other updates about the project – where are we?
  •  Presentation at Texcare
  • Reporting
  • Input from the participants
  • How can the material be used by the members?
  • The different activities of the project was discussed in depth especially the authorization controls and the educational material.
  • As well as a thorough review of the entire project, what went well, what could be improved
  • Tour of the facility
  • Lunch
  • Conclusion and summary
  • Project work

The project includes, among other things, a comparative analysis between the authorization processes in the two countries. Another central aspect of the project is the development of educational material aimed at professionals in the textile service industry. The analysis and recommendations for future authorization controls were presented at the meeting.

Educational material

The educational material, based on various aspects of quality control, aims to foster a deeper understanding of why these issues are crucial for everyone in the member companies. For instance, textile service professionals are likely to become more active in mending textiles and sorting used textiles for reuse and recycling. The material presents questions in a context that fosters greater commitment and pride among all employees within member companies.

The training material is available on a dedicated website for ”The new Scandinavian is Quality Control model” in English, Swedish, and Danish. It is divided into several sections focusing on:

  • Chemicals and water
  • Circularity and waste
  • Climate and energy
  • Hygiene and quality
  • Non-discrimination, inclusion, and contribution to society
  • The value chain
  • Working environment
  • The European Green Deal

The material is designed to be easy to comprehend, presented in a short and concise manner without complicated wording. Each section is followed by a voluntary test to assess participants’ understanding. Additionally, the material is available in audio, PDF, and PowerPoint formats to ensure accessibility for all.

Information and news about the project, including the educational material, will be communicated through various platforms and forums, including the associations’ website, social media channels, and the EPALE network, which also serves as a valuable source of information and hosts educational workshops on inclusion and accessibility.

Press release: Second physical meeting of
The new Scandinavian Quality Control model

On a sunny summer day the project working group, members, and other stakeholders of The new Scandinavian Quality Control model met at the BVT office, in downtown Copenhagen.

The agenda consisted of insightful presentations and discussions in the areas of analysis of usage of water, electricity, chemistry and oil/gas in industrial laundries, the newest regulation and trends regarding PFAS and EU’s strategy for environmental pollutants, and reduction of microplastics in industrial laundries.

Another important topic discussed during the meeting was the future EU legislation regarding sustainable businesses. The presentation focused on ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) as well as ESPR (Ecodesign for Sustainable Product Regulation).

Other presentations focused on the management and recycling of textiles, the possibilities for lower washing temperatures and hygiene requirements, and how to include this in a future control model.

Inclusion and environmental sustainability are key factors in the project

Inclusion and diversity are at the heart of the project. Accessibility and inclusiveness as means to open up for people with fewer opportunities are to be involved in all project activities.

The project will also explore environment and climate change since the majority of the requirements in the authorisation controls are related to environment and sustainability. By giving employees access to information about why the quality requirements in the process are important, and developing their skills on how to save resources and reduce energy, they can become true agents of change.

Knowledge sharing and new quality control material co-funded by the EU

The Swedish and Danish partnership for cooperation and exchanges of practices aims to create a forum for knowledge sharing and comparison of current Scandinavian quality control models for the textile services industry. This can serve as the foundation for further progress and development of new quality control models that comply with aspects of sustainability as well as European standards.

Both The Swedish Textile Service Association and The Washing and Textiles Service Association of Denmark currently execute yearly quality controls of their members. The controls ensure members hold high professional, corporate and environmental standards.

Throughout this collaboration, both parties aim to exchange experiences and ideas – creating new, innovative or joint curricula or courses ; Enterprise, industry and SMEs (incl. entrepreneurship) ; Quality Assurance. The project, which is co-funded by the European Union via Erasmus+, started the 1st of January 2023 and will proceed until the 31st of December 2024. One major multiplier event is the joint autumn meeting that takes place on November 16 in Halmstad, Sweden. There, the project results will be presented to members who will have the possibility to interact and give feedback on the work forward. The grand finale will be a presentation at Texcare in Frankfurt, November 2024.

The organisations

The Swedish Textile Service Association (Sveriges Tvätteriförbund) is an independent industry organisation representing members in both Swedish industrial textile services and consumer laundry services. The association has a long and proud tradition. Together with its members, totalling approximately 70 textile service businesses and 60 suppliers, the association pursues an active agenda focused on the future. The association’s members account for approximately 90% of the total domestic industry turnover. The Swedish Textile Service Association wants to make a difference for its members and society at large.

The Washing and Textile Services Association of Denmark (Danish: Brancheforeningen for Vask og Tekstiludlejning, BVT) is a professional interest and service organisation for industrially run laundries in the private and public sectors, as well as suppliers to laundries. The Association is part of the Confederation of Danish Industry as part of the Industry Community DI Service. Press release: First physical meeting

Environmental and social sustainability involve major challenges and major opportunities. As awareness of environmental and social possibilities increase, sustainable solutions become a necessity in every company’s plans and management – as well as an important means of competition.

A Swedish and Danish partnership for cooperation and exchanges of practices aims to create a forum for knowledge sharing and comparison of current Scandinavian Quality Control models for the textile services industry. This can form the basis for progress and development of new Quality Control models that comply with different aspects of sustainability as well as European standards.

One very important part is social inclusion – how do we promote equal opportunities and access, inclusion, diversity, and fairness.

The two project partners, The Swedish Textile Service Association (Sveriges Tvätteriförbund) and The Washing and Textiles Service Association of Denmark (Brancheforeningen for Vask og Tekstiludlejning), will also develop supplementary educational material connected to the Scandinavian quality control models that will help organisations and their workers achieve sustainable methods.

On March 29th, the first out of four physical project meetings took place in Malmö. Various stakeholders, such as members, communications experts and third party representatives that do the annual controls discussed how to proceed with the activities within the project.

An inspirational speech was given by Jan-Olov Kindvall, from the Swedish top football club Malmö FF, on how a leading football club works with inclusion and other key objectives.

Both The Swedish Textile Service Association as well as The Washing and Textiles Service Association of Denmark currently execute yearly quality controls of their members. These ensure members hold high professional, corporate and environmental standards.
